Townsville General Tourist Info

With around 140000 inhabitants, Townsville is one of the largest Australian tropical cities. It is a pleasant city, with an economy mainly based on mining, manufacturing, education, and tourism, with friendly people and there’s plenty to do. The town is nestled by the sea below the Castle Rock, which looms three hundred meters directly above. The beachfront had been recently renovated (A$29-million/US$23-million), only few years ago.
One of Townsville's main attractions is the world-class Museum of Tropical Queensland, where a full-size duplicate of HMS Pandora is the stunning centerpiece. The museum is just right to other major attraction of the city - the Reef HQ aquarium.
Remnants of old times are visible in some of the surrounding towns, especially in Charters Towers and Ravenswood, which are home to great examples of colonial architecture, historic buildings, museums, and exhibits of old gold mining machinery and cottages.
Cruises depart from Townsville’s harbor for the Great Barrier Reef, about two and a half hours away. Just eight kilometers offshore is the Magnetic Island, also called "Maggie" among the locals, which is a popular place for water sports, hiking, and spotting koalas in the wild.
