Charters Towers General Tourist Info

Charters Towers is a great historic mining city, which is full of beautiful edifices and encircled by many unusual and interesting attractions. The town lies one hundred and thirty kilometers southwest of Townsville and 1500 kilometers from Brisbane, at an altitude of around 330 meters, ensuring an excellent climate with comfortably cool nights and in addition to this just on 138 kilometers east of the Great Dividing Range. It is also about two hundred kilometers east of the edge of the vast flat plains that extend across to the Gulf of Carpentaria and into the western parts of Queensland. Charters Towers is deservedly the most picturesque inland city in Queensland. Like Kalgoorlie, Cue and Coolgardie in Western Australia, Charters Towers is a town built from the incomes of gold mining and as such, the city founders were determined to flaunt their wealth.
Today the main industries here include mining, beef (home-stay accommodation is available), education and surely tourism (a visit will explain why). Many tranquil water spots and various secluded lava caves ensure fascinating hikes and great camping. A walking tour is one of the best ways to explore and appreciate the history and the numerous grand colonial edifices that adorn the town’s streets.
