Katherine is actually the third largest town or settlement in the Northern Territory which is around 300km from South of Darwin City. It has a population of about 10000 people which changes especially during the peak or dry seasons when more visitors are being expected. It is actually a magnificent region for tourism attraction. The township is on the banks of the famous Katherine River which flows down from Catherine Gorge. This gorge attracts many tourists because it is actually funny and many people admire to watch it. This settlement is actually a remote destination with many waterways including the river waterfalls, gorges and ocean. It is these characteristics which makes it famous tourist attraction centre. Katherine is actually a great town that you can reach within three hour drive from South Darwin. Here you pass Cutta Cutta National Park, Katherine Hot Springs and the Leliyn Falls. It should be noted that Katherine’s star attraction is the famous Nitmiluk National Park.

 

Entering Katherine town is actually very easy. It should be noted that the quickest means of transport is to board a plane where you will fly into Darwin, hire a car and drive south along the Stuart Highway which will lead you to your destination. One can also travel by car which is around 3hour drive and 300km south of Darwin. Many people prefer travelling by bus where they board the so called Greyhound bus services whose offices are located at BP Travel North on the Catherine Terrace. Train is also convenient if you want to reach Katherine. The Ghan train operates the route twice weekly to Darwin from Adelaide via this destination. The plane now is the fastest and this is made easier by the availability of the Tindal Air Force Base which is located south of Katherine town. This acts as the airport for this destination although it is very easy to miss a plane but you can try the other means of travelling.
When you are travelling to Katherine there are must-see things on the way especially when you are travelling by train. You can be able to see the Catherine Gorge which covers about 300km of the magnificent escarpment. You can see sandy beaches of the main gorges while travelling; one can be able to view the ancient Aboriginal rock paintings high on the rock faces. The Victoria River Region can also be observed which is regarded as a Premier fishing holiday destination. Daly River Region also offers fishing and is also a camping hotspot.
There are many attractions around Katherine. The main attraction site is the Nitmiluk National Park which is a mother of various attractions that attract tourists in Katherine. We have the Katherine Gorge which is about 30 minutes north east of the town. It is the world renowned gorge where people can walk, swim, canoe or fly. We have the Leliyn or the Edith Falls which is in the western of Nitmiluk National Park. There is also Jatbula Trail which has waterfalls and Aboriginal rock art.
