Port Macquarie Tourist Information & Travel Guide

With a population of about 40,000 people, Port Macquarie City lies between Sydney and Brisbane along New South Wales coast. The fact that the city is located at the mouth of Hastings River gives you a good opportunity to indulge in the various water activities available. Apart from water sports, Port Macquarie area is famous for its Koala population for hosting Billabong Koala Park. The city hosts Koala Hospital from where injured koalas receive treatment and care.

 

You can enter the city by road or air. You can drive into the city from other cities through the Pacific and Oxley Highways. The Pacific Highway is popular with costal tourists as it also connects the city to Wauchope, which is a train station. By air, you will have to land at either Sydney or Brisbane international airports from where daily air service linkage is available to Port Macquarie City. While you can hire a car or tour van you’re your local travel around the city, you may opt to use the Holiday Coast Connection shuttle service that operates six days a week, connecting Port Macquarie to Lake Cathie, Teree, Forster, Newcastle local airport and other locations.
Port Macquarie has a lot to offer in terms of beaches. The area boasts of some of the best beaches in Australia including North Shore at far end North, Town Beach, Oxley Beach, Rocky Beach to Lighthouse Beach at South end. Apart from surfing, sunbathing and sailing activities, you are at liberty to attend the various annual events regularly organized. Such include Festival of the Sun mostly held in December, Pacific Coast Slam in January and Sundowner BEAM Classic in November amongst others.
The City hosts some of the classic hotels and restaurants in Australia that you can put up in. You have a choice of four star luxury hotels, resorts, motels and country retreats. Depending on where you choose to put up, you have varied services including swimming pools, walk-paths designed a long wildlife corridors, spa, spacious 2/3 bedrooms with private balconies. These establishments offer both international and local cuisine. Varied forms of entertainment are usually on offer.
While some hotels provide free Internet and phone services, others charge a small fee for the same. Different accommodation establishments have different conditions relating to admission of pets and you need to be sure that a Port Macquarie accommodation establishment you book allows you to have a pet. It is recommended that you book for accommodation before you arrive at Port Macquarie because the establishments are usually full.
Apart from the beaches, entertainment and the Koala Park, Port Macquarie has several golf courses. While some are private, others are public. Most of hotels have arrangements with golf course managers to admit their clients free of charge and you may take the opportunity to participate in some of the organized golf competitions. You may also choose to explore the greater Hastings Valley by bus adventure tours that operate within the valley.
